Believe it or not, this one’s been simmering for a while.
Two years ago, a chord progression and melody showed up out of nowhere—one of those moments where something lands in your lap and you just know there’s more to uncover. I brought it to Rachel Wilhelm, who was leading a songwriting retreat at our church, and she immediately pointed me toward Psalm 74. Before long, the chorus took shape:
Arise, my God, defend your cause.
Awake, awake, and break out of your slumber.
Those words hit hard. There’s so much wrong in the world right now, and the church isn’t immune. We’ve seen how a place meant for healing can sometimes become a place of harm. What I love most about the Psalms is how they don’t look away from any of that. The prayers aren’t polished or sanitized—they’re raw and honest, bringing fiery emotion straight to the God who’s willing to hear it all.
Musically, Arise is a whole new lane for us. It’s loud. It’s gritty. It’s a bit out of character from most everything else we’ve released—and I absolutely love it. There’s an energy in this track that mirrors the urgency of prayer itself. Sometimes you need a lament whispered in the dark; other times you need to cry out with guitars and drums shaking the room.
Arise is out everywhere you stream music, such as Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music!
Big thanks to Rachel Wilhelm for co-writing this with me, Jered McKenna for guitars, drums, and mixing, and Drew Elliott for mastering. Give it a listen, share it around, add it to a playlist if it speaks to you, or even sing it as a church! Chords and lyrics are below.
May this song give you space to name what’s broken, call on God to move again, and trust that He still hears your voice.
Arise (CCLI 7271683)
Rachel Wilhelm, Peter Assad
Verse
The world has set to flame the riches of your dwelling
And every echo of the prophets turn to scoffing
Like those who swing an axe, they bring us to the ground
How long, O God, will this be allowed?
Chorus
Arise, my God, defend your cause
Awake, awake, and break out of your slumber
Verse
If it was you who split the rivers by your power
Who crushed the ancient skulls of monsters underwater
And set before us all the season’s boundaries
Then why does it seem you won’t answer me?
Chorus
Arise, my God, defend your cause
Awake, awake, and break out of your slumber
